Coaches, marshalls, officials, administrators and other helpers

Thames Valley Harriers is run almost entirely by volunteers. In order to function, we are always looking for help from anyone who feels that they may want to get involved in, and contribute towards, any aspect of the running of the club. From administration work, fund raising, organising events, coaching, officiating, managing teams or helping in other ways, volunteers will always be made very welcome whether it is on a regular or an ad hoc basis.

Our coaches are volunteers. Many are former athletes, including elite internationals. Some are parents of children who are members of the Club. Others are still active athletes. Whatever their background, we welcome them to the club, and support their development.

We have many opportunities to get involved, either as lead coaches or assistants, and for adults and children alike. Whether you have previously been a coach or would like to be part of the coaching team for the first time, we can help you to progress on the coaching journey, and to gain qualifications along the way.

Throughout the track season we run a number of events and compete in several league competitions. For these to run effectively we rely on fantastic officials that volunteer their time.

For each of the league matches (SAL, UKWAL, UKYDL) the Club scores points just for bringing along officials. By attending a handful of meetings over the course of the year, you really can contribute to the team score. It is also a great way to meet like-minded people from all walks of life and

No prior experience is needed; and the club would be happy to pay for you to attend an officiating course

Thames Valley Harriers has the honour of hosting several cross country matches in the winter. To ensure the success of these fixtures we require marshals. No former experience is needed, just plenty of enthusiasm to direct and cheer on runners around the Scrubs.

Remember all the times you’ve run a race and appreciated the direction from the marshals – now it’s your chance to replenish your running karma and return the favour! If you can be there for just one of the day’s races or all of them it will be a great help, and it’s also possible to marshal before or after your own event on race day.

Other volunteers

Thames Valley Harriers is always looking for people to help with events. Whether it is moving and adjusting hurdles and steeplechase barriers, or raking the long jump pit, it is always greatly appreciated, and enables volunteers to get closer to the action on the day of the event. For any budding commentator out there, we are also always looking for people brave enough to have control of a megaphone during meetings.

And for anyone with culinary skills, we are always in need of volunteers to make up rolls and sandwiches to feed all the officials and hungry runners that come through the door on match days. Also, anyone able to spare time serving hot drinks and food is greatly appreciated, as this brings in money which can be re-invested to improve the club.
