UK Youth Development League

UK Youth Development League (YDL) is a UK wide league with 5 regions; Scotland, North, Midlands / Wales and South and Northern Ireland. The League is supported by UK Athletics, the governing body of the sport. This league is an amalgamation of the National Junior League and the National Young Athletes League, its first matches started in 2013.

From the outset, the YDL has provided opportunities right across the spectrum of events and the technical events in particular have benefited as athletes compete over hurdles and weights of their throwing implements are appropriate for their age.

The YDL is divided into two distinct age groups:

  • Upper Age Group for u17 (U17 on 31st August of competition year) and u20 (U20 on 31st December of competition year), (school years 10 to 13 including those slightly older but are still under 20 years old on 31st December in year of competition.
  • Lower Age Group for u13 (U13 on 31st August of competition year) and u15 (U15 on 31st August of competition year), (school years 6 to 9).

TVH compete in Southern Section of the League for both age groups. Many good individual and team performances have been achieved by TVH athletes in the YDL. The Lower Age Group team was promoted in 2013 and the Upper Age Group was promoted in 2014. There are 4 rounds of competition annually where all teams in the same division compete against each other in each round.

In 2019, TVH created a new YDL Upper Age group composite team with Ealing Southall and Middlesex, called Team West London. Composite teams are widely used in the Upper Age group, Team West London is an opportunity for our U17 and U20 athletes to move up the divisions and compete against the best teams in the country.

All clubs in both YDL age groups need to provide Timekeepers, Track Judges and Field Officials for every match. Each official score 5 points per match, TVH are expected to provide a minimum of 7 officials in each match. If you are interested in becoming an official or a volunteer for the team please contact Kirsty Addy (

Transport & Timetables

TVH provide coaches to YDL away matches as it is proven this has improved our success. The YDL is an all-day event so please put it in your diary, if you think you might be competing in this league. For all meetings, please make sure you have your own vest, lunch, refreshments, correct shoes and equipment, layers of clothing and sunscreen. For home matches and those who make their own travel arrangements should arrive in plenty of time to warm-up.

  • Hello,

Im really interested into getting into athletics again, and as I am 19 the Upper Age Group for YDL caught my eye. I used to do sprint training as a junior (12-15) for the 200m.
I am currently at Goldsmiths university but they do not have an athletics club. I am a rower for Thames RC and the University of London, training approximately 7 times a week ( Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, SaturdayX2, SundayX2) however as I’m a student I find this fairly easy to fit in and would love to see if I could take up Track training again… it’s been a while but i’d love to give it a shot.

If someone could get in contact that would be great,

    Many thanks,

  • Hi Hayley,

Feel free to come down the track on a Tuesday or Thursday night (from 6.30pm onwards) and you can join in on the sprint session.

You need to a member of TVH in order to compete for us.

  • Hello,
I am currently 16 years old and I have been running the 100m sprint for 3 years (12 – 15yrs). I recently moved to London and am finding it difficult to find an athletics club. I was wondering if there is a place for me in this club to train as a sprinter? Also what if I simply want to train for sprints to keep up my record and general fitness but am not as interested in competing in competitions, or what if I DO want to compete in competitions, would the trainings differ for each?
