Southern Athletics League Match 3 Report

On Sunday, July 13th, TVH athletes, volunteers, and officials headed to Finsbury Park for our third SAL of the season. Hosted by us, and with two consecutive wins already under our belt, the pressure was on.

We opened strong on the field, with Sophie Mace throwing 50.19m in the hammer, to take the win by almost 20 metres! Sophie’s example must have paid off, getting maximum points in 4/4 events that day, as our domination of the field continued throughout the day; sweeping victories in the Men’s A long jump as well as both strings of the discus and javelin. Meanwhile, the women obliterated their opposition in the triple jump, shotput, discus, and hammer. Louisa Snape even managed 2nd place in the B-string triple jump, despite her shoe falling apart mid-jump!

On the track, TVH reigned supreme. Chris Williams and Niki Faulkner cruised to impressive wins in the men’s 800m whilst Katie Sherlock made winning look easy in the 400 & 200. Distance queen Ella Burfitt continued her winning streak with dominant runs in the 3k and 1500, whilst the TVH men got a 1-2-3 in the 1500. The sprinters, including Joel, Hagen, Hebe, and Hannah sped to victory in the sprints.

With some of our athletes out due to injury, it was great to see individuals stepping up and competing in multiple events – an example of true team spirit. Special thanks go to Jake who ran the brutal 3k steeple after a 3k flat, Alice and Sarah who filled in last minute in the high jump, and Lara for running a brilliant 800m with less than 24 hours notice!
We’d also like to extend enormous thanks to those who came along to volunteer and showed their support for TVH!

WOTM: Hannah Hall for her wins in the 100, 200 races and as a brilliant new addition to the 4×100 relay team!

MOTM: Hagen Mzee, who won the 100m A-string as well as the 200m B-string, and was part of the winning quartet in the men ’s 4X100m!

As always, a huge thank you to all of the athletes, parents, coaches, officials, and volunteers. To claim three SAL wins in a row takes a lot of hard work, and it really is a team effort… though we may have had some birthday luck from John, Lumar, and Lisa!

Our next, and final, SAL is at Woking, on Saturday, August 30th. All that’s left to do is finish the season with a fourth match win, and defend our title as SAL champions. So clear your diaries, get training, and we hope to see you all there!
