NW London Young Athletes’ League – match report
The first match of the NW London Young Athletes’ League took place on Saturday 27th Sept at Berkeley Fields, Greenford.
The most exciting race of the day was the Under 15 Boys 3000m. Lucillo Burrell had not run since competing in the English Schools Championships in the summer. He led the field for the first 800m then was passed by two athletes who looked very strong and were opening up a gap. As they went into the finishing field one was 20 metres ahead of Lucillo and the leader another 20 metres ahead of the second boy. The result looked conclusive but from somewhere Lucillo changed gear to catch the second runner very quickly and somehow caught the leader on the line to win the race. Even in the last 20 meters it looked an impossible feat for him to win the race. Our only other runner, Nicholas Duer also gave lots of effort to catch an Ealing runner but just failed by four seconds.
One, Two, Three in the girls under 15 race looked very impressive. Again the Valley girls showed their class with India leading Verity and Kosana home. As in the other races it was sad that there were not more TVH competitors on such a lovely day.
On the brighter side we had four new young athletes doing their first cross country race. Unfortunately Eve Datnow, u11, twisted her ankle and had to drop out but the others all enjoyed the experience. India Hill was 15th u11 out of 24 and had something to spare at the finish. Basil Rock started with caution and moved through the field to gain fifth place in the u11 boy’s race. In the u13 girl’s, Helena Williamson chased Charlotte Cooney-Quinn and just beat her at the finish.
