Excellent Start to the Road Relay Season for TVH’s Ladies

Kirsty Addy reports:

The southern road relays held at Bedford Autodrome delivered an open course without shelter, so that gale force winds were thrown into the mix. The danger of getting hit by a lighter than light endurance runner swept off course by a gust of wind became worryingly real. But with the portaloos a mile away and a chip van that forgot to bring its mates, the day still oozed elegance and glamour.

The Thames Valley girls successfully secured an 11th place finish setting them up nicely for the National Road relays, and were mightily impressed with their free blow dry from the Bedford hurricane. The winds produced volume a hair dryer just can’t match!

Sarah Johnson got the A team off to a mighty start posting a time of 15:55 for a 5th place at the end of the first leg. She tactically ran very well, tucking in to the group in the windy conditions and finishing strongly. Kirsty Addy and Lisa da Silva (with bump) worked hard to keep us in contention passing over to the fourth leg in 16th place. Returning to form, Heather Timmins had a storming run to move us back into 11th place.

The B team threatened to transform two of our 400m runners into converted joggers. They had seen the team having so much fun doing lap after lap that they wanted a piece of the action. Lara Scerri and Sarada Nag ran incredibly well as our 1st and 2nd leg runners considering the huge step up in distance and the tough conditions. Well done girls! Our 3rd leg runner was race walker Kristina Belka who was donning the TVH vest for the very first time and was able to use the relays to support her winter training. Christine Munden then brought the B team home in style.

With several of our A runners unable to make it up to Bedford, it was great to see two full teams out at the relays, and have so many runners step up to the occasion. TVH plans to have at least 2 full teams race at Nationals. The team will be bigger, it will be faster and we shall thank God for closer portaloos.

UP THE VALLEY!
