8 December 2007        LONDON Championships, Parliament Hill

The rain was driving down cold and hard on Saturday as runners arrived at Parliament Hill for the London Cross Country Championships. A group of disconsolate competitors hung around the lido under shelter watching it pour down into the still full pool. There were not many around outside near the start, but we squelched up through the playing fields to see some of the earlier races complete and collect the numbers.

Fortunately the rain did ease off for the start, but there was a strong south westerly blowing for most of the afternoon. There was a rush of runners coming out of the heavily crowded changing rooms at the track only a few minutes before the start, which went off without too much ceremony, and not too many spectators, starting about half way up the infamous hill. Over the top and a sweep down through a very muddy sump at the bottom, hard left up and across the first meadow, again very muddy, and then the first long climb to the second meadow, and back. The 10k race consisted of 2 shortish and two longish laps. The longer laps added one more meadow. This was a tamer course than some laid at Parliament Hill, without the switchbacks that add in several more climbs. The return part of each lap was flat and fast, with the long fast descent at the end, four times in all, which was also quite muddy. Although wet, strength sapping and hard work most of the way round, the mud was not deep like it can be on this course, and the runners who braved the race did not churn it up as much as sometimes happens.

The wind made the outward legs somewhat easier, but was intermittently in the face on the two long climbs and across the top on the way back. It was also thankfully in the back on the final sprint home after the turn from the fast, slippery and treacherous final descent. The field seemed smaller than usual, perhaps because of the lack of spectators, although it did include an inter counties race as well, there were 305 in all.

7 valiant runners turned out for the Valley and thrashed around the course. Congratulations to James who came in 7th in the London rankings (unofficial, my calculations). It was good to see Steve Norris running again, and Peter Hill back from injury earlier in the year. Phil Wetton is making his mark as a Vet (sorry, Master) coming in 14th in the Masters.

Thames Valley was a creditable 16th Team out of 53, including many counties teams, with 331 points. By my reckoning, we were an excellent 3rd of the London teams.

24 November 2007        METROPOLITAN LEAGUE, Wormwood Scrubs

Although only two weeks after the last match, Thames Valley Harriers had a much stronger turn-out on their home course at Wormwod Scrubs. Although now missing lead runner Chris Smith for the rest of the season with a fracture, a full compliment of 12 senior men gained valuable points in their quest to stay in division one. James Sumpter was a splendid 12th in 28.37 and Gordon Irvine also had a great run to finish 19th in 28.57. Just in front of snooker’s Ronnie O’Sullivan, Manuel DaSilva was determined to beat him again and did so with 62nd place in 30.48 to Ronnie’s  64th. Next home was Phil Wetton in 85th with 31.31. Being in the top hundred was not to be for Bernie Robbins although he was pleased with his 107th place in 32.22. making one of his rare appearances, John Husbands also ran well for 126th  place in 33.01. Veteran Mike Ingram did well to finish 135rh, 33.27 and Mat Ponting at 146th was close behind, 34.05. Richard Bell struggled against the cold wind to finish 189th, 34.44 but Andy Emerson, an over 60 veteran just made it inside the 200s with 199th place in 36.03. Ever present Simon Maddison was last scorer in 238th spot, 37.34. Gerard O’Connell played truant from his shop to finish 252nd in 39.04 and Tony Smith was 264th in 40.29.

In the Women’s race our lone senior, Lisa Blackman improved from 50th two weeks ago to 27th. She was very pleased with her performance and her time of 23.42 for the 6000m course. We also had one veteran lady, Marianne Downie and she was round in 35.33.

In the U17/U15 girls race Mel Newbury,  U17, was a tremendous 3rd, just beaten on the line but with the same time as the second girl, 16.23. Just behind was Joanna Mobed in 5th place, the second U15 to finish, 17.02. Running her usual gutsy race, Michaela Shaw was 27th in 19.42 and  closing in for the team, Georgia Clark was 40th in 21.47. The team finished in third place out of 17 teams.

Our under 13 boys struggled against good opposition and Oliver Berg led them home with 13.57 in 18th place. Kyle Kenrick was 21st in 14.05 after playing rugby for his school in the morning. Not running as well as he should, Coslee Searles was 31st, 14.31 followed home by Jamie Edwards, 34th, 15.21; Nabil Toumi 35th, 15.50 and Charlton Bannister 37th, 15.53 made sure that they weren’t last this time. Their team finished 6th.

Yet again Sasha Tory made it into the first three. Her third place 14.09 was just three seconds behind second. Most pleasing run of the day came from Ella Julien in 17th place, 16.22. This time she raced the whole 3000m and beat Cassia Rowland, 20th, 16.52 for the first time in six races. Ellie O’Donnell, 19.57 and Ruby Claden-Chapman 20.00 were 34th and 35th. The team finished 4th and are 3rd in the overall league.

14 April 2007

A few TVH athletes opened their summer season at the Kinnaird and Sward trophy meeting at Kingston on April 14th. It was particularly pleasing to see two athletes returning from long lay-offs. Gavin Cook had his first serious Hammer competition for nearly two years and enjoyed a good return of 48.25m for third place. Pete Moloney returned to the track after a four year absence to record a useful 54.3 seconds in the 400m. Both men can expect much more over the coming months. Other highlights included a comfortable victory for Greg Conlon in the Pole Vault at 4.10m and a very respectable 60.8 seconds for Hugh Gallagher in his first try at the 400m hurdles. The other 400m runners had mixed success – Toby Sandeman finishing 8th in the A race with 51.7, whilst Louis Phiri finished 2nd in the B race with 51.6. The fastest on the day was Delroy Mitchell in 51.2 to win the non-scoring event.
